The short version
- The slides you upload are private to your account. Other students never see them.
- To read your slides, draw your figures and answer you, we send them to Anthropic's API (the company that makes Claude).
- If you join the waitlist, we use your email only to tell you when boredprof opens.
- We don't sell your data and we don't show ads.
- You can delete your account and everything in it yourself, any time, from settings.
What we collect
Waitlist. Your email, the course you typed (if you did), the time you signed up, the page you came from and, if you followed one of our links, the short tag in it (like yt-rs-01), so we know which of our videos or pages brought you. That's all.
Your account. Your name, email and password. The password is stored scrambled (hashed) so not even we can read it. We also keep your settings and your study progress: xp, rank, streak and how many minutes of tutoring you've used.
Your courses. The files you upload, the slide images and text we take out of them, the course outline we build, and the drawings the tutor makes from your slides.
Friend codes. If you use a friend's code, we keep whose code it was and the payments it applies to, so we can pay them a commission. They see totals only (how many people signed up and paid, and what they earned), never your name, your email or what you study. The payment records stay after you delete your account, because we need them for the commission and for tax, but they don't have your name or email on them.
Your lessons. What you type or say to the tutor (as text), photos of problems you send, and a snapshot of the board when you ask the tutor to check your work all go to the tutor so it can answer you. We don't keep transcripts of your lessons on our servers. We only count how many minutes of tutoring you've used.
Your uploads stay yours
Your slides and the drawings traced from them belong to your account and are shown only to you. We don't share them with other students, and we don't put them in our shared drawing library. That library only holds original drawings we make from a topic's name (like "sodium-potassium pump"), never from anyone's slides. If you upload the exact same file twice, we reuse your own earlier work instead of processing it again.
Who else handles your data
Anthropic. Your slides, your questions and board snapshots are sent to Anthropic's API so its Claude models can read and draw them. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, data sent through its API isn't used to train its models, and Anthropic keeps it only for a limited time under its own policies. See Anthropic's privacy policy and commercial terms.
OpenAI (the tutor's voice). The tutor's lines are sent to OpenAI to be spoken out loud. OpenAI doesn't train its models on what's sent through its API, and keeps it only for a limited time under its own policies. See OpenAI's privacy policy.
ElevenLabs (your microphone). On Pro and Max, when you talk to the tutor in your browser, your voice is streamed to ElevenLabs to be turned into text. We keep the text of what you asked, never the recording. See ElevenLabs' privacy policy.
Your browser and your phone. On Free, or if ElevenLabs can't be reached, voice chat uses the speech recognition built into your browser instead. In Chrome and Edge, your browser sends your voice to Google or Microsoft to turn it into text; that's their service, under their privacy terms. In the boredprof iPhone app, Apple's speech recognition turns your voice into text, on your iPhone when it can.
Payments. Stripe handles your card when you subscribe. We never see or store your full card number; we keep only your plan, your subscription's status and Stripe's reference for it.
Hosting. Our website and data sit on servers we rent from Hostinger, in the United States.
Security logs
To keep the service safe, the app keeps a short log of requests (time, IP address, page requested, result and browser type) for 30 days, then deletes it.
Cookies
One cookie, to keep you signed in. No advertising cookies, no tracking pixels, no analytics. If that ever changes, this page will say so first.
How long we keep things
Your account data stays until you delete it. Deleting a course deletes its files, slide images and drawings right away, and so does deleting your account. Waitlist emails are kept until boredprof launches and you've been invited, or until you ask us to remove yours.
Deleting your account
In the app, open settings and choose delete my account. Your account, courses, uploads and drawings are deleted right away. You can also delete a single course from its overview. Can't sign in? Email us from the address on your account and we'll delete it for you within 30 days. To leave the waitlist, email us and we'll remove you.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. We're based in Toronto, Canada, and handle personal information under Canada's privacy law (PIPEDA).
Kids
boredprof is for students 13 and older. If you're under 13, please don't sign up.
Changes
If we change how we handle your data, we'll update this page and, for anything important, email account holders before it takes effect.
